Face to Face Personal Training
Edinburgh · Oriam, Heriot-Watt
Is this you?
You know you should be building muscle. You're just not sure where to start.
The gym feels intimidating. Work and family are relentless. Somewhere along the way you stopped putting yourself anywhere near the top of the list, and you'd like to find your spark again — you just don't know what the first step looks like.
That's who I coach, and most of them felt exactly the same before they started.
What it's actually like
I think people worry about this more than they admit, so here's an honest answer.
You won't be on display. Oriam is big, and everyone in it is busy thinking about themselves. Nobody is watching you. I'll meet you at the door for the first session so you're not standing in the foyer wondering where to go.
We'll talk more than we train, the first time. I need to know what your week looks like, what hurts, what you've tried, what you actually enjoy. There's no point building you a programme for a life you haven't got.
You won't be made to do burpees until you feel sick. That's not coaching, it's just showing off. We start where you are and build.
You'll learn what you're doing and why. Not just follow along. The aim is that in six months you could walk into any gym on your own and know exactly what to do — which, incidentally, is why quite a few of my clients eventually move to online coaching.
Wear whatever's comfortable. Bring water. That's it.

How it works
1 / A free chat first
Half an hour, in person or on the phone. What you want, what's in the way, and whether I'm the right person. No pressure and no obligation.
2 / We set your goal backwards
Start at the finish and work back — what has to be true three months out, one month out, and then what you're doing this week. It makes a big goal feel much less like wishful thinking.
3 / I build your programme...
...around your life, your body and your history. It lives in an app, so you've always got it with you, with video demos for everything.
4 / We train together once a week...
...and you've got the rest of the programme to follow in between if you want to.
5 / We check-in properly
Not just "how was your week?" as you're putting your shoes on — a proper look at what's working, what isn't, and what changes.
6 / Nutrition, when you're ready
Usually a few weeks in, once training has become a habit. Small sensible changes rather than a meal plan. I worked as a nutritional therapist for eight years, so you'll get the useful bits without the fear.
7 / We track it however suits you
Some people want numbers. Some want photos. Some just want to notice they're not wrecked after carrying the shopping. All of those count.
Or train in a small group
Never more than three people. You get most of the attention of one to one, at half the cost, with people who'll notice when you don't turn up — which turns out to be surprisingly motivating.
Bring a friend or two and I'll build the group around you, or join one that's already running.
I've currently got space in a Monday lunchtime group.

What it Costs
When I Train People
Weekday mornings and daytime, including a couple of early slots for people who want to train before work. I coach around the school run — I'm a mum of two and I build my week much the same way my clients do.
If those times don't suit you, online coaching probably will. That's rather the point of it.
